Being offered is a truly rare and vintage Navajo Indian jewelry bracelet. This is made of coin silver, which was initially used by Natives before sterling became more plentiful. They would melt US silver coins and cast the silver to make the piece. This is a Fred Harvey era piece so the classic designs were die stamped onto the piece. This has a decent size thunderbird symbol and most Harvey era jewelry was much smaller than this piece.
The bracelet is in good condition and approx. 7/8 wide at its widest portion.
The inside circumference is approx. 6 5/16 including the back opening, and the back opening is approx. The piece can be made a bit larger or smaller, but please note, when this is done by bending, you run the risk of putting a bent mark on the piece. It is best to have a jeweler expand or contract the piece using the proper tool. The Fred Harvey Era was during the start of the early tourist travel to the southwest.
This started the demand for Native American Indian jewelry in the tourist trade. Fred Harvey set up hotels and motels along cities and train depots to service the travelers. Natives Indians set-up stands and tables to sell their wares to travelers or those just having a rest stop while on the train. Later, roads like Route 66 became the main travel route for vacationers, so tourist shops and trading posts sprung up all along the Mother Road (Route 66). Fred Harvey jewelry was always unsigned except for an occasional piece, and is the most collected Indian jewelry today. The design and style is unmistakable for Fred Harvey era jewelry.
